Guadalupe Mountains National Park and Chosa Campground February 2, 2020

Updated: Sep 30, 2020

Guadalupe Mountains National Park is an amazing place to experience cheap camping and have an affordable family vacation.
Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Texas - the 2nd park we enjoyed on our mini-tour of US National Parks in the Southwest.

A four hour drive North from Big Bend brought us to Guadalupe Mountains National Park in the Chihuahuan Desert.

We planned to spend two days and two nights at this Texas National Park, but due to a winter storm that was scheduled to roll in we almost bypassed it completely. Instead, we decided it would be a shame to miss the 40 mile stretch of #mountains, including the tallest mountain in Texas, Guadalupe Peak, so we decided we'd make a quick stop through for a sneak peak on our way to Carlsbad Caverns.

The temperature wasn't bad at all with a high of 65 degrees Fahrenheit and a low of 37 degrees Fahrenheit, but man was it WINDY. We had our hearts set on #hiking Guadalupe Peak, but the weather forecast was not going to allow us the ten hours required to make that hike. Instead, we marveled the Peak from below, toured the visitor center, took a quick walk through the Pine Trail and hurried off to the highly recommended Chosa Campground where we set up camp for the night.

The Chosa Campground in New Mexico is a 4 acre fenced in empty lot about 20 minutes from the Guadalupe Mountains Pine Springs Visitor Center that allows #freecamping.

Once we got there the kids ran around a bit while we made dinner. The temperature dropped quickly with the setting sun and that's when we tucked inside of the trailer for the night. Although there were no amenities, we were able to use our generator. We used that until 8:00pm and then switched to our propane heater for the night.

Our little heater kept us toasty warm, but the high winds that were scheduled to precede the winter storm came through with a vengeance.

25+ mph winds may not sound like much, but when you're tucked inside a tiny trailer with a pop out drop down bed you definitely notice. Especially when those extra fast 55 mph gusts come through. It was a bit of a sleepless night for me, but turns out I had nothing to worry about as we made it through the night unscathed. We will definitely have to circle back to revisit these locations when the weather is a bit more favorable. We failed to experience the beauty of the Guadalupe Mountains, but we will be back.
